In our third project we are going to participate in an international school fair. We are going to desing a magazine about the XIX century in Spain.
Each team is an editorial office and each member of the team is a journalist. Each journalist has two different roles inside the team.
+ By the end of the 18th century in France there were rigid social classes called Estates:
1) The Monarch King Louis XVI.
2) The Catholic clergy.
3) The nobles.
4) The middle class merchants and craftsmen who paid taxes to the king, the clergy and the nobles.
+ France sank into debt due to its support of the American Revolution and its war with England. King Louis called a meeting of the Estates- General, an assembly of representatives from the Three Estates.
+ Both of the upper classes (the clergy and the nobles) favoured keeping their privileges. The Third Estate (merchants and craftsmen) was so angry. They declared themselves the National Assembly and made a new Constitution.
+Thousands of Parisians joined with soldiers to attack the Bastille prison the 14th of July 1789, a symbol of royal power and a large storehouse of weapons. The Revolution had begun.
+ The Feudal system was abolished and The Assembly`s Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen proclaimed that individual rights and freedoms were fundamental to human nature and government existed only to protect them.
+ In 1792, King Louis tried to flee the country but he was caught. After a trial, he was executed in 1793. The First French Republic appeared governed by the motto “freedom, equality, brotherhood”.
+ Queen Maria Antonieta was executed as well. Some leaders wanted to completely transform French society, its religion, its street names, the calendar…
+ The extremist Jacobins, lead by Maximilien Roberspierre, launched a Reign of Terror executing 20,000 people.
+ In the middle of the chaos in 1799, a general named Napoleón Bonaparte took charge, becoming Emperor as he claimed to defend the Revolution`s democratic values.
